Nice piece by Ed on the death of Roy Dalrymple, another in Billings’ irreplaceable set of tough, public-spirited veterans. We always presume that nobody’s really irreplaceable — that somehow what needs to be done will get done — but I’m not sure we will ever see another bunch of Americans like Dalrymple and his peers. Forged in the misery of the Depression, tempered by war, they became an extraordinary mix of tireless energy, no-nonsense candor and tough-minded pragmatism. We suffer for their loss.
