The Billings Outpost

Get Outside Montana encourages activity

Get Outside Montana – the result of a collaboration of conservation organizations, government and businesses – aims to encourage children and their families to be more physically active, and to enjoy the recreational opportunities in Billings, Red Lodge and surrounding areas.

GOM is a back-to-nature event that is free and accessible for all ages. Participating families will function as a “team,” and are encouraged to engage in a friendly competition as they explore local recreational areas. Activities such as hiking, biking, swimming, camping, scavenger hunts, and geocaching will be featured.

Teams must consist of at least one person over the age of 18 and one person under the age of 18. Each week of the competition features several “guided” or “self-guided” events. A self-guided event allows teams to visit the designated park anytime during the 10-week event and engage in an activity on their own such as Frisbee golf or a scavenger hunt.

Each team will receive a passport that will be used to track teams’ participation in the competition. When teams check in at each guided event, they will be awarded five points for their participation. Teams must provide proof of completion of self-guided park activities (e.g., a sketch or photograph) and will be awarded a point for each activity completed.

For every 10 points earned a team will receive one raffle ticket to be eligible for prizes. A grand prize will be given to the team with the most points; all other prizes will be raffled off.

For the grand prize, the Spoke Shop will outfit a family up to four with brand new bikes. Prizes to be raffled include a weekend raft/canoe or kayak rental for the family with trailer from Sunshine Sports, a $250 GPS unit from Cabela’s, four half-day golf passes from Par 3, two $50 gift cards from Scheels, Patagonia fleeces for the family from Patagonia, a three-month Family Membership with shoes from SteepWorld, a variety of outdoor gear from Sylvan Peak Mountaineer Shoppe and a one-year membership from Montana Audubon Center.

Attend the Kick-off Event from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at Audubon Center to receive your passport, a goodie bag loaded with information and to get a head start on the competition. Activities will include macroinvertebrate search, how to pack a backpack, knot-tying, archery, wildlife games, information about local plants and a visit with Smokey Bear.
